Pipkin Family Leighton Buzzard
I have related elsewhere my trials in researching the Stratton family. Having discovered my Great Grandfathers, fathers details, led me to his wife's mother Eliza Pipkin. Another relatively unusual surname which should be easily traced and I can see in various records that the name is common in Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire from whence my Eliza originates. To date I have only been able to gather the information below which does not allow me to link into any traceable family. They are there for several hundred years but which line does my Eliza link to? Any information which adds to that included would be appreciated.
Eliza Pipkin married John Fisher Oct 1939 Leighton Buzzard. Her father is noted as William Smith, Chimney Sweep on the marriage certificate.
In 1841 John and Eliza are in Edenbridge, Kent, Eliza is shown as 15 but with rounding up/down is probably 17. John is shown as 20. One child Phillis aged 1 month is shown. John's occupation is a Rail Road Labourer. This explained why they moved around so much.
In 1851 The family is in Rickmansworth. John is an agricultural labourer aged 33, shown as born Rickmansworth. Eliza is shown aged 28 born Leighton Buzzard.
Their children are Jane 7 yrs b Folkestone, Maria aged 5 yrs b Folkestone, James aged 3 yrs b Ashford, Eliza aged 1 b Manfield, Sussex and Thomas 6 mths b Rickmansworth. Also shown living with them is Jane Pipkin, Sister-in-law aged 15 birth place unknown
Phillis is not with the family but can be found living in Leighton Buzzard with the family of Thomas Brandsey (Brandsom). His wife is Sarah b c1815 in Piddington, In 1851 she is a straw plaid maker.
Phillis is described as niece born Eaton Bray, Kent, which probably should be Edenbridge. It would appear from BMD's and Census that this Phillis is the second child named Phillis. Phillis death is recorded in October 1841 in Sevenoaks reg district which includes Edenbridge where the family are noted in the 1841 census. This makes Sarah Brandsom, Eliza's sister along with Jane
In 1841 Elizabeth Pipkin aged 9, Jane Pipkin aged 7 and Henry Pipkin aged 4 are living with Samuel Brandsom aged 30 and Elizabeth Brandsom aged 40. This provides a further link to the Brandsom family with whom Phillis later lives and also links Jane who is with Eliza in 1851.
From these links Eliza Pipkins siblings are Sarah b c 1815 Piddington, Jane b c 1834 Leighton, Elizabeth b c1832 Leighton and Henry. There is also a James Pipkin b 1824 in Dugnall, Bucks which should be Dagnall. It is probable that he is also a brother from the information available. He marries Louisa in 1844 and is on the 1851 census with 2 children Mary Jane and Samuel James.
There are various other Pipkin Families in the area around Leighton Buzzard
1841 Census for Leighton Buzzard Workhouse shows George Pipkin age 13 yrs. A straw Plaiter
Also in the workhouse are James Brandom 7, Harriet Brandom age 4 and Rachael Brandom 35 with William 6 and Marian Ann 3.
Samuel Pipkins b c1791 Beds with Frances c1791 and James c1826, John c1827 and Sarah c1833. Their marriage is shown as 17 4 1836 in a Leighton Buzzard , Transcript.
BMD's show a John Pipkin marriage to Sarah Hoverd in 1839 in Leighton Buzzard
Elizabeth Pipkin marries John Church in 1861 aged 28 which fits with the Elizabeth above.
The 1841 census also shows Thomas c1811 and Sarah Brandom with James 4 and George 2
There is only one baptism for Pipkins noted in the Leighton Buzzard Transcript Disc 1812 - 1851 which is for Henry Cubbage Pipkin illegitimate son of Ann.
The question therefore is where did these christening take place and who are the parents
If the christening didn't take place in Leighton Buzzard, surrounding parishes will need to be searched in both Bucks and Beds.
